ABOUT US

Would you believe that this entire idea was started from a Facebook status?  On November 8th, 2013, after the world discovered the devastation in the Philippines, someone posted a Facebook status inquiring people should start to do something to help.  Ramon Chavez, a Golden Valley Middle School student, (pictured above in the khaki shorts) took that message to heart and created a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Helping-The-Philippines/682110818489477) to raise awareness to his idea. This was all done by the end of the night (November 8th).  Over the course of the weekend, Ramon had recruited a few of his eighth grade classmates, Yes, eighth grade, who wanted to make a difference.  By Monday morning, those friends had found more friends and classmates to join in. From Friday to Monday, the students came up with fundraising ideas, delegated leadership roles, and brought their teacher up to speed.  By Friday afternoon, one week later, the students had written over 100 donation letters,

and almost 100 letters requesting local business owners and store managers permission to place donation jars in their places of business.

The group is planning many events to help raise money for thier cause.  They are planning a pancake breakfast at their local American Legion (in Golden Valley, Arizona), a bake sale, a t-shirt fundraiser, a penny war within the school, a walk-a-thon, and even a version of toys for tots so that the children will be able to have some form of a Christmas.

Who would have thought that a bunch of seventh and eighth grade students could be so motivated and all with out any adult encouragement.  These motivated students are trying to make a difference and prove a very good point. They are proving that anyone can make a difference if they are motivated.

They hope to get support and assistance from as many people as possible to help out a country in dire need.
